Forum Opposition and Resistance – Extended Feasibility Study

Following the successful completion of the first feasibility study for the “Forum Opposition and Resistance” based on a site-independent design, the implementation on the “Campus for Democracy” is now to be examined. The spatial program for the new “Forum Opposition and Resistance” developed from the concept in the first feasibility study is to be transferred in this study to four other buildings on the “Campus for Democracy”, the former headquarters of the Ministry for State Security in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The aim of the study is to evaluate which building would be suitable for hosting the program. Buildings 15, 18, 22 and the canteen will be examined in several planning stages. The latest conservation report from the Berlin State Monuments Office (February 2022) will be taken into account and exclusion criteria formulated. After the analysis of the four buildings, the space program will be transferred to the most suitable building on a more precise scale and finally the costs (according to BKI) will be determined.

Machbarkeitsstudie
Following the analysis, it was decided to examine House 18 in detail. This building is located directly at the entrance to the campus, at the northern end of the main axis. Along this main axis of the campus, which runs from north to south, there are various institutions dedicated to the history of the GDR and its communication. Their work underlines how important it was to stand up for freedom and human rights and how we as a society can protect these achievements. This is not just a place to look back into the past, but a place where different actors work together to create a place of commitment to a free and democratic society.
House 18, the former MfS supply center with storage, sales and office space as well as a multifunctional hall, stands out in the building ensemble due to its architectural design. It could become an incubator for culture and creativity in Lichtenberg. The FOW’s spatial program could be accommodated in around half of the building’s space, creating a wide range of opportunities for joint use with other local initiatives.
